Each attack lasts from a few seconds up to one minute and can occur dozens or even hundreds of times per day. Between attacks, there is no pain, and the neurological examination is normal \u2014 this is one of the key diagnostic features of typical trigeminal neuralgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"tn1-causes\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Causes of Typical Trigeminal Neuralgia (Etiology)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common cause of typical trigeminal neuralgia is <strong>mechanical compression of the trigeminal nerve root<\/strong> by a nearby artery as it exits the brainstem.<br>In the early stage, pain is triggered only when the nerve is stimulated \u2014 for example when speaking, chewing, brushing teeth, shaving, or touching the face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With time, repeated compression <strong>damages the nerve fibers<\/strong>, making the nerve hypersensitive. A neuropathic pain component then develops, and pain may start to appear spontaneously \u2014 even without a trigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"tn1-epidem\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who develops Typical Trigeminal Neuralgia<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Typical trigeminal neuralgia most often begins after the age of 50 and is more frequent in women, and is rare in individuals under 40. The condition often has cycles: episodes of frequent attacks followed by remission lasting weeks, months, or even years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"tn1-sypt\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Symptoms of Typical Trigeminal Neuralgia (Clinical Presentation)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pain is sudden, stabbing, or electric-shock\u2013like, usually affecting one side of the face. It may appear in the jaw, teeth, cheek, near the nose, around the eye, or deep inside the ear.<br>Even light stimulation \u2014 such as chewing, talking, brushing teeth, or exposure to cold wind \u2014 can trigger the attack.
